BRICS is uniquely positioned to reshape the global landscape by fostering a more inclusive and diverse knowledge exchange, according to Dr. Rasigan Maharajh, Chief Director of the Institute for Economic Research on Innovation at Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa. Speaking to Sputnik Africa during the International BRICS School in Moscow, Dr. Maharajh emphasized the collective strength of BRICS nations, which bring their distinct cultural and historical perspectives to create a global dialogue that is both rich and inclusive.
“With BRICS and BRICS Plus representing the majority of the global population, preserving and defending the knowledge commons becomes increasingly vital. We must stand against any restrictions on the free flow of information,” Maharajh said, highlighting the importance of knowledge exchange in fostering equitable global development.
Dr. Maharajh further underscored BRICS’ potential to challenge dominant power structures by promoting a “dialogue of equals” rather than one of dominance. This is especially relevant as more African nations express interest in joining BRICS, seeing it as a platform for achieving peace and prosperity across the continent. He noted that African countries view BRICS as a pathway to peace and economic progress, free from the influence of external forces that perpetuate conflict.
Moreover, Dr. Maharajh sees great potential for BRICS to contribute to the success of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), promoting greater economic integration and strengthening Pan-African unity. By working within the BRICS framework, African nations can accelerate their development and achieve a more just global order.
