Cuba has taken a formal step to join BRICS as a partner country, as announced by Carlos Pereira, Director General of Bilateral Affairs at the Cuban Foreign Ministry. The request was submitted through a letter addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who currently chairs BRICS, a bloc seen as a key player in global politics and a voice for the Global South.
According to a report by News.Az, Cuba’s application aligns with its ambition to deepen cooperation with emerging economies within the BRICS framework. On Monday, Russian Ambassador to Cuba, Viktor Koronelli, confirmed the submission of the application and emphasized that Cuba’s inclusion would enhance its role in global diplomacy.
Additionally, Koronelli shared that Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has been invited to participate in the BRICS Plus/Outreach session at the next BRICS summit in Kazan. This extended meeting will provide a platform for potential partner countries to engage with the BRICS bloc on issues of mutual interest, including economic and geopolitical strategies for the Global South.
