In a reaffirmation of their steadfast alliance, South African Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, declared that South Africa will “never turn its back” on Russia. His comments came during the International United Cultures Forum held in St. Petersburg from September 11 to 14.
McKenzie underscored the deep historical connections between the two nations, particularly highlighting the critical support provided by the USSR during South Africa’s struggle for freedom. He pointed out that the USSR played a pivotal role in aiding South Africa’s fight against apartheid by offering refuge to South African leaders and providing other forms of assistance.
The minister’s remarks were made on the sidelines of the Forum, which is part of a series of events leading up to the 16th BRICS Summit, scheduled to be hosted in Kazan, Russia from October 22 to 24. Russia, serving as the BRICS chair for 2024, is organizing a series of 250 activities across 11 regions in preparation for the summit.
McKenzie emphasized the enduring nature of the relationship between South Africa and Russia, stating, “That relationship has never died, and that relationship will never die. We will never ever turn our back on Russia, and Russia has never turned its back on us.”
The reaffirmation of this bond highlights the ongoing solidarity between South Africa and Russia, as both countries continue to navigate their roles in the international arena and within the BRICS framework.
